Makeover Monday: Massive Pressure Treated Wood Deck in Gambrills

While many homeowners choose composite decking for large-scale projects, many Maryland clients opt for natural wood, taking into account a combination of aesthetic, environmental, and practical considerations. Wood’s natural warmth and appealing grain patterns provide an authentic and timeless look that many find visually pleasing, contributing to a classic and inviting outdoor atmosphere. Homeowners in Gambrills, Maryland had an existing wood deck that sprawled across their beautiful backyard, but it was in rough shape — rotting and missing boards showing signs of mold, and algae growth. With such a stunning landscape and outdoor pool area, they reached out to Fence & Deck Connection to replace their massive deck with high quality wood and superior craftsmanship. With the help of Project Consultant Kevin Bullion and our talented deck installation crew, our clients can head into the spring and summer with the backyard of their dreams!

We first removed and hauled away all of the existing wood decking, and replaced it with multiple deck sections of decking much like the original layout. Six deck sections totaled an incredible 1070 sq. ft. of free-standing pressure treated wood decking. The new deck includes a walkway and steps near the pool area. All railings and handrails were installed with matching pressure treated wood, along with pressure treated wood seam boards, feature boards, and fascia.

One set of 7′ wide “picture-framed”wood steps lead down from the main deck to the pool walkway, and another set of 6′ wide picture-framed wood steps lead down from the walkway to grade. A third set of 5′ wide steps lead off the deck onto the concrete walkway. At the pool’s entrance, we installed a pressure treated wood double gate complete with an AquaLatch — a magnetic gate latch that works as a pool safety latch when matched with self-closing hinges. Federal and local pool codes require self-latching gates for pool barriers to keep children safe and unauthorized people from entering the pool area. The new deck and pool entry way is now up to code and safe for homeowners and guests!
