Homeowners in Maryland are increasingly making the switch from traditional wood decking to composite materials, and for good reason. While wood decks have long been cherished for their natural beauty and classic appeal, they come with significant maintenance demands, including regular staining, sealing, and the risk of splintering or rotting. Composite decking, on the other hand, offers a low-maintenance, durable alternative that can withstand Maryland’s ever-changing weather patterns. Made from a blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, composite decks resist fading, scratching, and mold growth, providing homeowners with a long-lasting, visually appealing surface that requires only occasional cleaning.
Customers in Columbia, Maryland contacted Fence & Deck Connection for help re-imagining their outdoor space, making the switch from wood decking to TimberTech composite. Using the original deck frame, Project Consultant Jake Wolod helped design this re-deck project that completely beautifies and modernizes the home and backyard.
Before:
We first removed the existing decking, railing, and stairs while leaving the original framing. We added new joists and installed 364 sq. ft. of TimberTech Edge Prime+ decking in the Dark Cocoa hue. As one of our stock boards, TimberTech Edge Prime+ Dark Cocoa offers the simple, traditional wood look you love without the rigorous maintenance of wood. Featuring subtle color blending and a rift-and quarter-sawn straight grain pattern, the lighter weight scalloped profile premium polymer capped composite boards deliver real wood aesthetics you’ll never have to sand, stain, or seal. White vinyl Washington-style railings with round black aluminum balusters enclose the new space, with a matching Dark Roast cocktail rail adorning the top. White textured fascia wrap completes the new look, along with a new set of stairs to grade.
