Trex Decking Renewed in Upper Marlboro, Maryland

This week, we’re showcasing a beautiful transformation of an older mix material deck into a modern work of art with long lasting materials. Looking to complete their home with superior craftsmanship and long-lasting composite decking and sturdy, beautiful railing, homeowners in Upper Marlboro, Maryland reached out to Fence & Deck Connection to design their outdoor space. Project Consultant David King met with our customers in PG County for a free onsite estimate appointment to discuss their vision for the outdoor space. They decided to reuse their current decking, while upgrading the framing, stairs, and railing!

Before:

We first removed and hauled away the existing frame and stairs, but kept the existing Trex Transcend Rope Swing deck boards for use on this makeover project. A pale, sandy taupe, Rope Swing is a carefree color for a place of outdoor leisure, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. We then replaced the existing deck with a beautifully crafted 12’9″x12′ pressure treated wood frame and reinstalled the Trex deck boards. For a cleaner, more polished look, we added Rope Swing feature boards around the perimeter of the deck – much like a picture frame.

We replaced the old wooded railing with black Alta-style Ultralox aluminum railing, complete with 1/4″ tempered glass panels. The primary benefit of glass panel deck railings lies in their ability to enhance aesthetics and maximize visibility, allowing homeowners to enjoy panoramic views while maintaining safety and security. Additionally, glass panels are durable, resistant to weathering, and require minimal maintenance compared to other materials, making them a practical and long-lasting choice for both residential and commercial spaces.

We installed one Alta Ultralox aluminum gate with 1/2 square balusters at the top of the new staircase which also features aluminum railings. Tan vinyl Carolina skirting adorns the perimeter of the deck and stairs, with a matching skirt gate for under deck access. As an alternative to traditional lattice, Carolina deck skirting hides the structural supports, pipes, wiring, and other unsightly elements underneath the deck. This helps create a clean and polished appearance, preventing these features from detracting from the deck’s beauty. By enclosing the space beneath the deck, skirting helps deter pests and critters from nesting or seeking shelter underneath. This can reduce the risk of infestations and damage caused by animals such as rodents, insects, and stray cats.

Last but not least, we “decked” out this project with perimeter light caps on the Ultralox posts, as well as three black Corona riser lights to illuminate this new, modern space at nighttime!
