When homeowners decide to upgrade their outdated decking, they have a big design decision to make — create a new deck in the same layout and footprint of the existing deck, or redesign the space for a completely new look and outdoor experience. Project Consultant Kevin Bullion worked with our clients in Columbia, Maryland to expand their deck space, eliminating the various dropdowns and sections. The large open space is perfect for furniture sets and outdoor dining and entertaining! Take a look at this deck transformation in Howard County below.
Before: Outdated Wood Deck
To start, our crews removed and hauled away the existing wood deck to replace it with new free-standing structure. The new construction holds approximately 510 sq. ft. of TimberTech Reserve Dark Roast decking that runs parallel to the house. The vivid and elegant colors found in the PRO Reserve Collection are inspired by reclaimed wood and the heavy wire-brushed, low-gloss finish showcases the classic cathedral wood grain pattern. A Dark Roast feature board and seam board frame and accent the large space nicely.
To enclose the deck, we installed white vinyl Lincoln-style railing with square black aluminum balusters. As an additional design “accessory,” we also installed a 2″ x 4″ drink rail using Spiced Rum colored Trex Transcends decking. This railing topper is not only a great place to place a beverage on a hot summer day, but also a level spot to rest your hands, elbows, or plants or planters! A burnt umber with onyx black lowlights, Spiced Rum resembles tropical ipe, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. It’s a great complementary color to TimberTech’s Dark Roast.
White vinyl textured fascia helps give the deck a crisp, clean look, and white vinyl privacy lattice (with an access gate) adorns the deck’s bottom, keeping out pests and debris. A set of 4 steps lead down to the backyard. Our clients wanted to make sure they could enjoy their deck long after the sun goes down, so we installed 6 white Saturn post cap lights and 4 white Pyxis step tread lights.
