This week, we’re featuring a beautiful TimberTech deck in Parkville, Maryland complemented by the modern look of cable railing. Cable railings are constructed from posts, rails, and narrow cables that allow you to see your surroundings right through the railing. Cable railings are the ideal option for homes near or overlooking the water, especially for many homes in Anne Arundel County and other water-view Maryland cities, as they will not be affected by the morning fog obscuring the view like glass railings often are.
Project Consultant Steve Nehus worked with homeowners in Baltimore County to transform their outdated, rotting wooden deck into a modern piece of outdoor art! Keep scrolling below to see the stunning makeover.
Before:
We first removed the original deck, steps, and lattice before constructing a new 16′ x 10′ deck in the existing space. With a new, sturdy frame, we installed 166 sq. ft. of TimberTech Driftwood decking secured using hidden fasteners. A matching Driftwood feature board frames the space nicely.
Black Alta railings, and black aluminum posts, and a modern-style cable rail beautifully encloses the new deck. Similar to other types of aluminum railing products, cable railings are highly durable and can easily withstand exposure to all kinds of harsh weather patterns. All cable hardware used in cable railings is made from marine grade stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion and requires minimal maintenance. Additionally, cable railings can easily blend in with any design or style of home, from contemporary homes to traditional homes, thanks to their clean lines — though it does offer a more modern look to the home’s exterior.
The deck is wrapped with Driftwood fascia, secured by color-matched screw, as well as Driftwood cladding around the perimeter. One access door on the deck’s left side allows for under deck storage. Composite cladding is a lovely, more modern alternative to traditional lattice, and it also helps to keep any pests or creatures from making a home underneath your deck!
