This week, we’re featuring a beautiful TimberTech deck in Annapolis, Maryland complemented by the modern look of Carolina skirting. Project Consultant Kevin Bullion worked with homeowners in Anne Arundel County to transform their outdated, rotting wooden deck into a modern piece of outdoor art! Before:
We first removed and hauled away the existing wood deck, steps, and railing before building a 14′ x 20′ new free-standing structure. The new deck was adorned with 280 sq. ft. of TimberTech Reserve decking in the Driftwood hue, with boards running parallel to the house. Driftwood is a lovely, warmer grey tone that has depth and character. A Driftwood feature board adds visual interest to the deck and offers a cleaner, polished look.
White vinyl Washington-style railing with black aluminum black balusters safely enclose the new outdoor space, with one 4′ wide set of picture framed steps leading down to the backyard. This layout differs from the previous deck, which had steps that spanned the length of the deck and a handrail in the middle. The new deck no longer has lighting on the stairs, but instead, we added a new feature that adds a modern, decorative touch. Instead of traditional lattice skirting, Carolina deck skirting hides the structural supports, pipes, wiring, and other unsightly elements underneath the deck by using vertical or horizontal paneling. This helps create a clean and polished appearance, preventing these features from detracting from the deck’s beauty. By enclosing the space beneath the deck, skirting helps deter pests and critters from nesting or seeking shelter underneath.
